We went to Catalina Island for Memorial Day. It was a return trip, we had been there for my birthday, and we really enjoyed it. We decided to look further into it, who knows, maybe buy a house there ...
So we checked into the same hotel we had the last time. This time we had a better view. We also brought better beverages... The next day, we went on an all daty tour of the island. Our guide has lived on the island for 46 years. He's an active member of the Catalina Conservancy, a non-for-profit who owns most of the island. That means that the island will not degenerate into an overgrown hamlet. Specially since they have limited water supply. The dry interior has its own beauty. Back to the tour. Have you heard of the famous buffalos in Catalina? It's true, they're everywhere in the inland. They were left over from a movie, and since then have become a successful breeding program. We went all the way to the other side of the island, to Two Harbors (some people call it Twin Harbors). It is beautiful, a bit crowded because of the holiday. We enjoyed a quiet lunch there, and learned more about the history of the island and its major players, like the Wrigley family who is still very much involved in the island. It was a beutiful day...
On the way back, some surprises. There was another beach, with a campsite, which only the locals go to. It was kind of crowded too, and our guide told us that the locals want some roads fixed so they can go to other parts easier. The conservancy doesn't like to fix roads, since it means more people roaming the island. It's a fine balance.
Of course, no uting with Steve is complete if there is no wine connection. Guess what we found in the middle of the island? Yes, a winery. It shocked us, but we shouldn't be shocked. It's perfect Zin weather...
More beautiful vistas on the way back, with a picture of Avalon from a different angle. Don't youjust want to come over and visit? indeed, it was beautiful.
The next day we flew back. Yes, we went by helicopter and returned by helicopter. It takes only 15 minutes, much easier and a lot better for me, since boats are not my preferred way of transportation. All in all a great break.
Go back to the Slaterhome!
We'd love suggestions on cool links, wines, recipes and music for our evenings!
