Becoming An American Citizen

The Big Decision

OK, so I finally decided to become a citizen. I surprised Steve and my in-laws on Mother's Day. We toasted the decision and on Monday I started to search for information.

My first stop was the White House site, since it has links to all other offices. It directed me to the Homeland Security Office. I had to navigate a bit to find the information I needed, and decided to fill out the Naturalization Eligibility Worksheet. Guess what? It says I'm not eligible! That's a shock. My husband and I have been married 22 years, so I assumed I'd have no problem. I have to do some more research to find out why. I downloaded the Guide to Naturalization; maybe it can give me some more information.

After reading the Guide, I was reassured that I am eligible. Phew! That was close. The problem was that after I became a Permanent Resident we lived in Brazil for 3 years. But since I've been here for 18 years, I meet the "continuous residence" requirement, as well as the "physical presence" requirement. Back to the worksheet.

I even answered the History and Government test - missed some questions, so I learned more. As long as I don't miss when the time comes…

I tried to download the form; it keeps "hanging" my computer. Since I have to read the instructions first, I'll do that and download tomorrow.

I couldn't wait, and finally downloaded it. I know the hardest part will be listing the times I was out of the country. Steve is lucky enough to have a job that pays for the spouse to go along on trips, and I've been to some of them in Europe. Plus we love to travel…
